How to address aggressive lifents while contributing as little as possible to the environments that support them.

How does one respond to persistent provocative verbal attacks by a bully who chooses you as his victim? One must first be able to access that environment and have an approach that will have the desired effect on that environment.

The bully has multiple environments that support his behavior. One broad environment is his accumulated memory and learning from his past experience. Another broad environment is the social environment that supports his behavior either intentionally or unintentionally.

If one tries to control him and his behavior and attacks him as someone who is inferior and unworthy, that may increase his clinging to his bullying behavior. If his bullying is a response to unjust childhood abuse and discrimination against him, he may see this approach as just coming from another abuser. He may have learned how to deal with that thousands of times in his life. Strike them first before they strike you, is one possibility. Hurt and overpower people so they can’t hurt you, is another possible way he learned to stop the pain and feel good.
